Abstract

At the beginning of April 2010, in the earthquake-struck Mariani 30 km west of the capital Port-au- Prince, medical services were provided by eight of our medical team members in collaboration with five local members(-one doctor, three nurses and one tent village leader-). The tent village set up for victims was erected on the grounds of a destroyed school. According to information from the village leader, the tent village housed a total of 2,703 persons in 601 families, of varying ages. Each family was given one tent, housing from 3 to 10 persons. Medical services detected health problems in 154 OPD patients such as -digestive infections, gynecologic infections, skin diseases, common cold-like illnesses, suspicion of malaria, high blood pressure and stress symptoms with stomach pain, lack of sleep, and no appetite. Causes of these observed diseases were accessed to be related to environmental hygiene conditions in the tents, toilets, water supply, garbage areas, as well as with delivered food conditions. From our experience working with local medical professionals, our NPO, the Disaster Nursing Support Organization discovered future challenges to work on in the area of Medical Relief Activity.
