Objective: The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative analysis of the opinion and needs of families evacuated from Fukushima Prefecture regarding media coverage after the Great East Japan earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accidents of March 11, 2011.

Methods: Anonymous, self-administered questionnaires were sent to householders of families that were forced to evacuate from Fukushima Prefecture to any of seven other prefectures in the Kanto region. The investigation was conducted during a six-month period in 2014.

Results: Out of total 859 adult respondents, 326 responded to the free response items regarding media coverage. Stress caused by media coverage is likely an important stressor influencing subjective stress.

Conclusion: The strong criticism expressed by evacuees in this study regarding slow and inadequate responses and reconstruction efforts by the national and local government were similar to those seen after of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Also, similar to the Chernobyl case is that when differences in opinion among scholars about the effect of nuclear radiation on human health are amplified by media coverage, rumors begin to proliferate and stress increases among residents. Since stress from evacuation plus stress from media coverage increases overall stress, it was shown that it is necessary to further reduce stress.
