Abstract

The purpose of this study was to clarify the characteristics of triage performed by nursing students and examine an educational problem. Triage training based on rally method was conducted by fourth-year nursing students using simulated patients. Analyzed items were accuracy and time required to judge triage patients' conditions, contents of triage tags, and responses to post-training questionnaires. Characteristics of students included difficulty in predicting changes in condition due to a lack of knowledge regarding disasters, confusion regarding communication with victims and the collection of information, and inability to effectively use triage tags as an information source. However, nursing students who completed lecture and clinical practice in related subjects had the ability to comprehensively judge patients' conditions. These findings indicate that while it may be necessary to immediately examine the contents and range of learning of basic knowledge regarding the acute phase of disaster, the ability to make accurate and fast judgment as specialists is a realistic goal for training. In addition, training based on rally method using simulated patients provided an opportunity for students to realize the difficulty of triage and the need for knowledge, and was thus effective for increasing their motivation toward learning.
