Abstract
To clarify how local residents staying in evacuation centers after disasters help one another to maintain health, group interviews of local resident leaders who had lived in such centers after the Chuetsu Earthquake were conducted. Respondents were asked what they had done to support health for people around them and what they thought they should have done, and responses were categorized by semantic similarity. The results showed that mutual health assistance efforts in evacuation centers included helping people to maintain physical and mental wellbeing, supporting disaster relief workers, and building relationships with others. Information on such efforts is expected to be useful in local-resident disaster prevention education programs administered by public health nurses.
