Abstract
Objective
This study was performed to assess the awareness of disaster prevention and the effectiveness of a disaster imagination game(DIG)among high school students attending a disaster prevention seminar. The ultimate aim was to clarify measures that should be taken to improve young people’s awareness of disaster prevention and disaster prevention capacity in local communities.
Methods
Fifty-one high school students attending a disaster prevention seminar in City A between October and November 2010 filled out a questionnaire designed to assess their knowledge and awareness of disaster prevention. The responses were evaluated based on simple tabulation and qualitative categorization.
Results and discussion
More than half of all respondents were interested in disaster prevention but had attended the seminar in response to a recommendation. Nearly half previously had no knowledge of disaster prevention, and more than 80 percent had not engaged in disaster preparation efforts. More than 90 percent of respondents had a positive view of their participation in the DIG. Changes in respondents’attitudes to disaster prevention after playing the DIG were categorized as“recognition of the need for awareness of disaster prevention,”“interest in disasters,”“acquisition of new knowledge”and“recognition of the need for mutual assistance.” We plan to develop a disaster prevention program to encourage participants
to gain accurate knowledge, increase their awareness of disaster prevention and support the implementation of appropriate action through simulated experience highlighting the horror of disasters and vulnerability to them.
