Abstract

Objective:The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between disaster preparedness and social support for elderly people living alone.

Method:The subjects were 142 elderly people aged over 65 living alone. The authors collected data by conducting an anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey on disaster preparedness, and performed multiple regression analysis on the results to identify

characteristics of disaster preparedness.

Results:Of the 132 respondents, questionnaires from the 118 who answered all questions (89.4%)were analyzed. The average respondent age was 79.2±7.3 years with no significant difference by gender. The factors influencing disaster preparedness were social support from close family and relatives(p<.01),previous experience of disasters(p<.01),male

gender(p<.01)and IADL(instrumental activities of daily living)(p<.01).

Conclusion:The survey’s findings suggest that elderly people living alone are helped by close family and relatives on a day-to-day basis. However, relationships with neighbors should also be strengthened to enhance preparedness against unforeseeable disasters.
