The objective of the present study was to obtain basic information for expanding the activities of daily living (ADL) and enhancing the quality of life (QOL) of elderly dialysis patients by elucidating their actual conditions of their hobbies and activities as well as recuperation. In the present study, we conducted a survey on elderly outpatients receiving maintenance dialysis at facility A by administering the PGC Morale Scale, the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology (TMIG) Index of Competence, and a self-report questionnaire on items such as hobbies, activities, and physical function. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were categorized by semantic content. The results were as follows. Response were obtained from 70 subjects including 38 men and 32 women with a mean age of 73.3 years (SD,±6.0 years). A total of 40% of patients reported having hobbies and activities, of which over 20 types were identified. Compared to patients who did not have hobbies and activities, patients who had hobbies and activities had higher scores on both the PGC Morale Scale and the TMIG Index of Competence. Mann-WhitneyUtest using a significance level of 5% showed significant intergroup differences in median scores for both the PGC Morale Scale (U=297.500,p<0.05) and the TMIG Index of Competence (U=294.000,p<0.05). Patients who had hobbies and activities also tended to experience less fatigue following treatment.
