 The purpose of this qualitative study were: 1) to clarity how adults with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) evaluate the effects of home remedies; 2) to find the reasons why they continue home remedies. Data were collected through interviews with open-ended questions among a community-based sample of 20 adults with NIDDM who have taken any home remedies. Most popular home remedy is to take health food. Almost of their purpose of home remedies to improve diabetes is to improve diabetic status and blood glucose level. 41.7%of home remedies to improve diabetes were evaluated effective, and many of them were evaluated effective to manage other health problem. People who evaluated home remedies effective to improve blood glucose level said that the medical remedies also affected that good effect. During continuing home remedies,“stability of health condition”was evaluated effective,“good change of health condition”must not be always expected. The reason why they continue home remedies were: 1) trust, confidence, reliance; 2) effectiveness; and 3) expectation of good effect continuing home remedies for a long time. There are necessity to; 1) find how they combine prescribed medical remedies with home remedies; 2) identify the difference in the value of home remedies between medical staffs and patients; and 3) find new methods to make the most of patients capacity for health management.
