In this study, 751 students of Hirosaki University described their images of persons with mental disorders. There were many negative images (i.e. "fearful", "dangerous", "intense", "complicated", "difficult", "lonely" and "no relation"). The proportion of positive images of subjects with knowledge of mental disorder was greater than those without. Therefore, it follows that correct knowledge of mental disorders contributed to positive images of mental disorders. In addition, past experience of meeting persons with mental disorders was more effective for creating images of persons with mental disorders. It is suggested that further research on images of mental disorders is necessary to confirm the effect of lectures and practice on students.
