At two institutions in Hokkaido, we investigated (using the questionnaires for occupational therapists and caregivers) the purposes of production and the employment conditions of seating systems for children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities. The results were as follows : 1) many occupational therapists considered the importance of facilitating "a function of upper extremity" and "obtaining a sitting posture" as the purpose of production; 2) caregivers also considered "locomotive function" and "reclining function" as an advantage with regard to seating systems, and "to store"as a weakness in seating systems; 3) caregivers did not consider the facilitation of "a function of upper extremity " as the operative advantage of the seating system. From these results, we considered that we should instruct caregivers in not only basic functions of the seating system but also additional functions.
