Using a visual search task, the present study investigated preattentive and focal attentional processes in schizophrenic patients. The results indicated that, in the preattentive process, the schizophrenic patients functioned at a normal level, but there was a deficit in the focal attentional process. Next, we analyzed the relationship between the visual search task and psychiatric symptoms as well as disabilities. There was a significant relation between the some values of search tasks and the disability measures but no relation between the visual search task and psychiatric symptoms, suggesting that disability may be caused by a deficit in visual attention. Further research seems to be necessary to clarify why these results were obtained.
