A survey was conducted on 88 schizophrenic inpatients of Mihara Hospital; these patients were interviewed about their image of occupational therapy. The mean age of the subjects was 47.7 years (SD = 10.7). The occupational activities to be surveyed were limited to handicraft, cooking, physical exercise, paid indoor work, and horticulture. The subjects were requested to give the images they had toward the activities in which they had been engaged. The survey was conducted in January 1997 by using the SD method.

 The results were:

 1) The common images toward the occupational activities were "fun, fulfilling, and refreshing".

 2) Analysis of the survey data extracted six factors of the emotion factor, health and satisfaction factor, activity quality factor, tension factor, work-like factor, and merriment factor.

 3) Comparison of the six factors between the five occupational activity types revealed interesting results; that is, many of the images were common among types despite the differences in the activities. The emotional stability and satisfaction, in particular, were acquired commonly in all activity types as the effect of the occupational therapy. A few of the images, however, showed a difference depending on the kind of activity.

Based on the results, various elements from the occupational activity images were discussed in this report.
