Two different scales to examine assets of quality of life (QOL)-Satisfaction for Daily Life Scale (SDL) and Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale (PGC)-were administered to both groups of elderly inpatients and of outpatients receiving day-care services. Barthel Index (BI) was also administered to determine if any correlation would exist between their level of ADL and these scores.

The results showed that, compared with the outpatient group, the group of inpatients scored significantly lower in all SDL items except for the "education" ; their PGC scores were also lower on the items regarding "loneliness and dissatisfaction". In addition, correlation between the scores of BI and SDL was found only with the group of inpatients. No correlation was found between the scores of BI and PGC.

Importance of providing elderly inpatients with opportunities to interact with their families and friends, to express their feelings, and to take their roles in their families will be discussed.
