This study attempted to investigate characteristics of stressors on the job and in housework among working women with depression. 45 healthy women and 45 women with depression participated in this study. Perceived work stress was evaluated using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health general job stress questionnaire. Stress from housework was assessed with the NIOSH questionnaire-revised for housekeeping labor, which was prepared by the authors for this study. The questionnaires include 7 scorable items under each topic. The association between these scores on 14 items and depression was analyzed by a two way factorial analysis of variance. Women with depression showed the same tendency as normal women on six of seven items, and the depression group showed higher scores on six items than the normal group. Scores of “quantitative workload” showed interaction. Scores on The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health general job stress questionnaire with the depression group were significantly higher than the normal group (p<0.05). In the depression group, the scores on The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health general job stress questionnaire were significantly higher than the scores on the NIOSH questionnaire-revised for housekeeping labor (p<0.05). These results indicate that quantitative workload may be a characteristic factor of women with depression.
