This paper reviews the development and present status of voice therapy research and gives some prospects for future progress. Based on this review, the following summary is made. First, most studies support efficacy of treatment for voice disorders although existing data is limited. Second, there is little data regarding diagnostic conditions (duration of symptoms, nature and severity of voice disorders), as well as length of treatment sessions and duration of treatment. Nor is it clear whether gender affects the success of therapy. Recently studies using high-quality experimental designs such as randomized control trials are emerging to address the question of which kind of voice treatment techniques are most effective for voice disorders. We need more studies with high-quality experimental design. In the field of voice therapy research, motor learning theory developed by Dr. Schmidt has come to be applied to in voice treatment in studying a better way of providing feedback, etc.
