After much debate in meetings held by the Japanese government regarding work style reform for Japanese physicians, policies that encourage further implementation of task shifting within Japanese hospitals are expected to be considered. It is essential to fully understand the concepts of task shifting and task sharing and to build a supportive, cooperative system within the hospital to implement task shifting effectively. The goal of task shifting and task sharing is much more than just reducing long working hours of Japanese physicians. By correcting distortions in the medical community and by making the health system more efficient, medical care should be delivered more safely, and ultimately,it should benefit the patient.
