The worldwide pandemic due to novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infections (COVID-19) is not yet under control. ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) caused by the immune inflammatory response induced by SARS-CoV-2 has been reported to be different from conventional ARDS and is one of the factors that make the management of patients with COVID-19 infections difficult. COVID-19-induced ARDS (CARDS) is characterized by time-related changes in elastance, ventilation flow ratio, lung weight, and recruitability, and Type L is a unique finding not seen in conventional ARDS. This paper describes the pathophysiology and characteristics of CARDS Type L based on the results of clinical studies.
