 The purpose of this study was to identify perceived tasks of nurse executives for in-service education. The data were collected from convenience sample of 13 nurse executives working in general hospitals, through semistructured interview. By using Berelson's content analysis method, 12 categories were identified. Those were 〈developing systematic educational program based on a clear educational goal〉, 〈enriching educational program planned according to one's years clinical nursing experience〉, 〈planning educational program reflected evaluation〉, 〈enriching educational program in nursing unit〉, 〈supporting autonomous learning based on a clear goal〉, and so on. The 12 categories indicated necessity of 6 kinds of further research for supporting educational program planning. These were [1. research for developing learning needs assessment tool], [2. research for identifying the relationship between nurses' learning needs and their back ground], [3. research for developing system to support efficiency education for new graduated nurses], [4. survey of the actual situation of education in nursing unit], [5. research for identifying structure of learning need], [6. research for developing self evaluation scale].
