The purpose of this research is to clarify how nursing faculty perceive other faculties' behaviors as role models and the characteristics of such behaviors, and to discuss the utilization possibility of the research results for nursing faculty development.

Questionnaires were mailed to nursing faculty who agreed to participate in this research. Participants were full-time faculty at baccalaureate nursing program, associate degree nursing programs and diploma nursing schools in Japan. Among 821 responses received, 241 which described their superiors or colleague as role models were analyzed by Berelson's content analysis method. Of the resulting 48 categories of role model behaviors, 8 were isolated as specific characteristics. The agreement rates calculated by the formula of W. A. Scott were over 70%. therefore the reliability of these 48 categories were confirmed. Results suggest that six of these eight characteristics are feasible to be used as viable indicator for nursing faculty development.
