This aim of this research was to describe common difficulties faced by doctoral course of graduate school of medicine students and their mentors while developing qualitative nursing dissertations in Japan. Seven doctoral students and their two mentors were interviewed. Data analysis was conducted using systematic coding and category extraction.

As a result, eight categories emerged describing students’ difficulties while engaging in qualitative research : [making a decision to choose qualitative research], [suffering while interpreting a concept for the research theme], [hard to find participants], [anxiety about unsuccessful interviews], [consistency of analysis was unsustainable], [perplexed over what data is necessary for research purposes], [anxiety over possible rejection by committee even if qualitative research is explained], [struggle during the process of facing themselves]. When the students faced these difficulties, mentors were able to approach them. The following twelve categories were extracted from mentor interviews : [mutual planning about writing dissertation], [mentoring about interview process and using well-directed question], [stepping up the literature review], [setting up the frequency of students’ individual interview and spending time mentoring about data collection and analysis], [providing more in-depth discussion about research methodology], [providing opportunities to present research to others], [developing strategies to convince others about their dissertation], [mentoring in each case due to keeping a consistent of thesis], [generating their motivation], [making a commitment to keep their pace going during dissertation writing].

In addition, three categories were extracted about mentors’ difficulties. [committee members lacked knowledge and understanding about qualitative research], [spending a lot of time to coordinate judging policies among committee members], [difficulties getting published in a journal]. And mentors also encountered these challenges : [making an effort to understanding qualitative research for other mentors and committee members] and [building up their own mentoring skills].
