Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is a sub type of hospital-acquired pneumonia that develops in patients who have been intubated and have received mechanical ventilation for at least 48 hours. VAP contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Many previous studies have shown the risk factors and preventive management for VAP and that they are intimately related to each other. The care of the mechanically ventilated patient is at the core of a nurse's clinical practice in the Intensive Care Unit, including tracheal suctioning, oral care which is related to preventing the development of VAP. In this paper, risk factors of acquiring VAP, the current nursing measures and clinical practice to prevent VAP, and the need for further nursing research on VAP are discussed.
