 This article introduces basic theories and the skills development in the discipline of social welfare, mainly based on lectures by Professor Hisashi Hirayama and Professor Yasuyoshi Kuroki. Further on, it refers to integration of these theories with public health nursing field that has developed a great deal of in-depth knowledge and skills to help develop theories around support-group and community group dynamics to understand the processes and activities that yield successful outcomes.

 Some of the points introduced in this article include the definition, characteristics, transitional and developmental stages, power dynamics and the leadership role of groups, as well as communication and interactions among them. Skills for group work were also explained.
