[Objective] To examine the factors influencing self-care in patients with scleroderma (SSc).

[Methods] The modified Health Assessment Questionnaire and Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale version 2 were used for assessing the self-care state, and other established scales including Rheumatology Attitude Index (RAI) for helplessness, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) for depression and the Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC) were applied in 50 SSc patients. In addition, disease severity including skin thickness and internal organ involvement was also measured. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the significant factors affecting self-care in SSc.

[Results] The self-care score was correlated significantly with RAI score, BDI score and internal organ involvement. Multiple regression analysis showed that high levels of RAI and BDI and the presence of additional rheumatic disease complicated were significant factors influencing self-care in SSc, which finally accounted for 38.0% of the variance.

[Conclusion] The factors such as patients' helplessness, depression and additional rheumatic disease complicated were paid attention to, for planning to improve self-care in SSc.
