Purpose : To examine relaxation effects of hot footbath using lavender oil.

Methods : Forty healthy volunteer women and men (mean age 19.8 years) were randomly assigned into aromatherapy group (n=21)and control group (n=19). Before footbath, stress tests of memory/a recognition test by a plate were undertook. Then, both groups received a ten minutes footbath in artificial climate room with room temperature 25℃ and humidity 50%. The aromatherapy group bathed with lavender essential oil, despite the control group with hot water. To examine relaxation effect, questionnaire of the Japanese UWIST mood adjective check list (JUMACL) and skin conductance change (SCC) were performed before and after the footbath.

Results : In the aromatherapy group, SCC significantly decreased from footbath after 1min, to 5min, or to 10min despite no significant changes were noted in the control group. Similarly, score points of energetic arousal significantly decreased only in the aromatherapy group. No significant differences were found in changes of energetic arousal and tense arousal between both groups. Content analysis of written and verbal notice indicated refresh feeling and relaxing. Some subjects in the aromatherapy group indicated that consciousness related to “warmth” increased.

Conclusions : These results suggested that hot footbath using lavender oil was more effective in inhibition of sympathetic nervous activity. Hot footbath using lavender oil might be effective in terms of relaxation and pleasurable sensations.
