  • Look Inside

The purposes of this study were to assess the relaxation response and examine the effect of reduction delayed nausea induced by chemotherapy using cisplatin (CDDP) on foot massage combined with a footbath (care). The subjects were twenty-eight patients with lung cancer. The care for the experiment was done from day 3 to day 5 of the CDDP treatment and the total number of care treatments was fifty-seven. The care was a foot massage (10 min. per foot) after a footbath of 7 min. The electrocardiogrm (ECG) R-R intervals were continuously measured by digital Holter ECG. Heart rate variability was performed using the analysis of wavelet for extracting high frequency (HF). The perception of nausea was measured on a visual analog scale (VAS). Repeated-measures analyses of variance were performed on the mean of the R-R intervals. The comparisons were made of immediately before care and 30 min. after care the VAS measurements were performed with Wilcoxon's signed-rank test. Results showed a significant main effect (F=61.214, p=.000) , and no interaction effect of care over all the days on R-R intervals mean variable (F=1.279, p=.262). During foot massage and 30 min. after care, it was showed a significant increase in R-R intervals compared with 10 min. before care on all days. The variations of HF were classified into four patterns. At 30 min. after care, VAS was significantly lower than the values of VAS immediately before care (day 3 : p=.000, day 4 : p=.013, day 5 : p=.028). Furthermore, 86% of subjects experiencing nausea achieved a reduction in the perception of nausea. All subjects expressed feeling good on the subjective evaluation. The results suggest that foot massage combined with a footbath leads to the relaxation response and improves in the perception of delayed nausea induced by chemotherapy.
