CASE REPORT-A 37-year-old white female was admitted to the U. S. Army Institute of Surgical Research on November 5, 1973, after sustaining second- and third-degree burns*1 over 67. 5 per cent of her total body surface. Forty-six per cent was estimated to be third degree, involving all portions of the body with most of the third-degree component on the legs and arms. The injury was incurred on November 4, 1973, when gasoline fumes ignited in a boat off Key West, Florida while the inboard engine was being refueled. The patient, initially knocked down by the explosion, was rescued from the burning boat and was immersed in the water to extinguish the flames.*2 The patient was transported within the first two hours postburn to the Key West Naval Air Base Hospital where immediate resuscitation was begun. Later that day a burn team from the Institute of Surgical Research arrived at the Naval Hospital, and the patient was evaluated and transported by air ambulance to the Institute of Surgical Research. She was admitted to the intensive care unit and was listed as seriously ill. Numerous complications*3 associated with severe burns developed and therapy was provided as these were recognized. Despite strenuous therapeutic efforts, she suffered a cardiac arrest and expired*4 on November 9, 1973.
