Morphology and functions of the bone are maintained by bone-resorbing osteoclasts, bone-forming osteoblasts, osteocytes, chondrocytes, and other types of cells. Both to deepen our understanding of bone remodeling and to advance bone regenerative medicine, it is essential to identify molecular mechanisms by which these bone cells communicate with each other. Coupling factors to be sought are conceptual osteoclast-derived factors that attract, differentiate and activate mesenchymal stem cells or osteoblast progenitors following bone resorption to refill resorption lacnae.
