  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

In the two cases of relapsing polychondritis, abnormally high level of the serum chondroitin sulphate was disclosed. Although further confirmation was needed, the measurement of the serum chondroitin sulphate level was expected to be a promissing diagnostic procedure of this rare disease.

The rationale of this measurement was described. In either patient, the airway obstruction was attributed to a swelling of the subglottic mucosa. In addition, one patient had a collapse of the bilateral main bronchi. Although such respiratory distress was relieved by administrating corticosteroid to some extent, tracheostomy was finally required. Since death can often be caused by respiratory tract involvement in this disease, emphasis was placed on the importance of early tracheostomy.
