  • Look Inside

The purpose of the present paper is to classify the severity of nasal symptoms in allergic rhinitis for evaluation of the efficacy of anti-allergy drugs. The classification is required to satisfy the following conditions : it is available to the patients with allergic rhinitis, who have both uniform and ununiform severity among nasal symptoms ; As the severity increases, complete disappearance of symptom should become less frequent ; scoring system is preferable to grading system in convenience of statistical analysis.

Two hundred sixty patients were examined by a multicentric intergroup comparison double blind trial for efficacy of HC 20-511 (Sandoz) and Clemastine fumarate (Sandoz) in perennial allergic rhinitis, and nasal symptom of the patients, and the treatment results were retrospectively analysed.

In conclusion, the following method of classification was found to be applicable : the severity of each nasal symptom (sneezing, watery discharge and nasal obstruction) is first classified in the four-point scale (no symptom, mild, moderate and severe) and scores (no symptom : 0, mild : 1, moderate : 2, severe : 3), and then total score is the over-all severity of the nasal symptom of patient.
