  • Look Inside

Impedance audiometric measurements were obtained in 24 patients with classical rheumatoid arthritis and their tympanograms were studied. A Madsen ZO 72 impedance audiometer was used and probe tone frequencies were 226 and 660Hz. At both frequencies, more than 30% of the ears showed other types rather than type A tympanogram. Only at 660Hz probe tone were there the notched tympanograms in 13% of the ears. Therefore we postulated the relationship between a notched tympanogram and a middle ear function damaged by rheumatoid arthritis, and concluded that the middle ear function might be changed by rheumatoid arthritis. Further study on the types of tympanograms and ankylosis of the incudostapedial joint should be needed.
