  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The bacteriological examinations on the nasal and paranasal cavity were conducted in the patients with the chronic sinusitis. The results were as follows :

 1) The majority of the detected bacteria from the nasal cavity was aerobic gram-positive coccus such as staphylococcus and streptococcus.

 2) About 50% of the detected bacteria from the paranasal cavity was anaerobic bacteria. And about one fourth of that detected bacteria was aerobic gram-positive coccus and gram-negative bacillus.

 3) Even in the same patient, it frequently occured that the bacteria detected from the nasal and paranasal cavity were not identical. Accordingly, it should be required to collect the solution by means of irrigation of the maxillary sinus in order to identify the pathogenic bacteria of the sinusitis.

 4) In most cases of the chronic sinusitis improved by the general conservative treatments, the phlogistic bacteria were the anaerobic bacteria and the aerobic gram-positive coccus. Contrarily, the aerobic gram-negative bacillus like haemophilus influenzae were found as the phlogistic bacteria in the intractable cases of chronic sinusitis. In the cases showing no improvement by the general conservative treatments, the possible improvement in symptoms is expected by the antibiotic therapy, which is effective on the gram-negative baccilus.
