TAKEDA in an attempt to solve the question whether or not bacterial contents found in sinusitis are capable of establishing allergen, subjected 30 cases of known sinusitis with skin tests by using autovaccine intracutaneously. The test showed strongly positive dermal reaction in 10 cases, weakly positive in 11 and negative in 9. By means of microscopic examination of sinous mucous membranes, the character of nasal discharge, eosin: hile count, intracutaneous histamine test and cell agglutination, these cases were further classified categorically into three types of affections which according to Hansel is that of truly allergic, purulent and mixed. It was found that all 6 cases of allergic type to be weakly positive; in the purulent type, 10 cases out of 17 to be strongly positive while th other 3 were weakly positive; in the mixed type, 5 cases out of 7 were negative. Presence of bacterial allergy in allergic and purulent types of sinusitis was not recognized but in the mixed type it was shown in majority of cases. Etiologically the mixed type is believed to be the product of bacterial invasion on allergic sinusitis or the result of chronicity in the state of infection whereby offending organisms come to develop allergens to the host; majority of sinusitis of the mixed type are believed to be belonging to this latter category. No special characteriatics were noted in the examination of bacteria of this type.
