  • Look Inside

Papillary hypertrophy of the tonsils is relatively rare among morphological abnormalities of the palatine tonsils, and only 36 cases have been reported in Japan.

We found this disease in three members of a family, and observed the papillary surface of the palatine tonsils by the histopathological examination and scanning electron microscopic examination.

Tonsillectomies were performed on a 42-year-old male and his daughters of 8-year-old and 12-year-old under general anesthesia. The histopathological examination of the tonsils revealed lymphoid hyperplasia. According to the scanning electron microscopic observation of the papillary surface of palatine tonsil, the surface looks rugged, but micro ridge is observed in the free surface, which is quite similar to the normal tonsil.

It is thought that the etiology of this disease is genetical or congenital.
