Vidian neurectomy markedly decreases nasal as well as lacrimal secretion.

Therefore, it is a choice of treatment for crocodile tears. A 39 year-old man developed crocodile tears 3 months after the onset of Bell's palsy. After Vidian neurectomy performed in 1971, the patient has been free from symptoms for more than 3 and a half years.

Another 39 year-old man showed an increased nasolacrimal reflex after Vidian neurectomy which relieved running nose of intractable allergic rhinitis.

A possible neural mechanism is discussed by postulating an inhibitory nervous system in the Vidian nerve.
