  • Look Inside

Vidian neurectomy is effective for treatment of those cases of vasomotor rhinitis where paroxysmal sneezing and rhinorrhea are the dominant symptoms. The authors noted the following symptoms after the operation. There was a remarkable improvement of hyposmia though the relation between olfaction and the vidian nerve is not established. The nasal discharges changed from the watery to that of sticky mucous simulating nasal crust that caused the patient to complain of nasal impairement even more than before the operation. However, this condition was overcome by instillation of adrenalin solution. Smears taken from the nasal secretion failed to show any decrease in the eosinophyl count after the operation although there was a difinite improvement in the nasal symptoms.

One patient showed a symptom of asthmatic attacks with wheezing respiration following this treatment.

The x-ray study of the vidian nerve was also made.
