  • Look Inside

Since the advance of the usage of high voltage radiography the diagnosis of many laryngeal diseases have been enabled to become more accurate. However, the importance of the distance that is found lying between cervical vertebrae and trachea has not yet been recognized. The authors made such measurements in 41 subjects, with the following results: (1) The distance at the level of the 6th cervical vertebra does not correspond to the sex, weight, stature nor to the size of the neck.

 (2) The distance at the 7th appeared to be corelative to the size of the neck.

 (3) The mean distance at the 6th cervical vertebra measured 11.8±0.3mm. The authors propose 13 mm as the standard of enlargement of the distance.

 (4) When the distance is found to be increased the patient should be further investigated more thoroughly by means of esophagoscopy and esophagrams.

 (5) The disease in which the distance may be increased are laryngeal cancers, hypopharyngeal cancers, esophageal cancers, retropharyngeal abcesses and thyroid cancers.
