Two cases of congenital cyst at the lingual base are reported. The first case a male infant, aged 41 days, developed an inspiratory stridor. Examination showed a smooth reddish, firm mass on the midline base of the tongue which was confirmed with a lateral cervical x-ray.

The second case a male infant, aged 44 days, presented difficulty in breathing and feeding whichdeveloped soon after its birth. The infant was admitted to the hospital in acute respiratory distress which progressed to the state of apnea. The patient was resusitated; direct laryngoscopy revealed a bulging hyperemic mass at the base of the tongue in the midline position.

The causative factor for respiratory obstruction in these two cases was the presence of cyst at the base of the tongue that pressed the epiglottis down over the larynx. Under endotracheal general anesthesia, the cyst was marsupialized in each case by excising the dome of the cyst.

One month after the surgical treatment in each case x-ray examination showed no recurrence of the cysts.
