A rare case of laryngeal hemangiopericytoma is reported.
A man, aged 47, complained of dyspnea, aphonia and a laryngeal tumor, which proved to be hemangiopericytoma by biopsy. The patient was treated with surgical operation supplemented by irradiation therapy consisting of 6, 120R. of Co60. At the same time the patient had another tumor in the left submaxillary gland, which proved to be a socalled 'mixed tumor'. This growth was enucleated.
One year and three months after the initial irradiation therapy the patient developed a squamous cell carcinoma on the left inner side of the larynx. This growth was considered to be a "radiation cancer" caused by previous irradiation. The shortness of the latent period that existed between the initial irradiation and the appearance of radiation cancer might have been abetted by complication of the operative wound by laryngeal fistulization and the high doses of irradiation therapy given to the hemangiopericytoma.
A clinical review of literatures on hemangiopericytoms in the head and neck region is added.
