Bilateral facial palsy, facial diplegia, is considered as a rare condition. Eleven cases of this disease consisting of 2 cases of traumatic origin, 2 of postoperative, 2 of congenital, 2 of symptomatic and 3 of idiopathic, seen in the facial clinic, Department of Otolaryngology, University of Tokyo, are reported.
The etiology of bilateral facial palsy is different from that of unilateral palsy. The pathology of socalled alternating palsy in idiopathic bilateral palsy is believed to be different from that of the Bell's palsy.
On attempting to diagnose bilateral palsy the initial symptom of systemic disease should always be considered. The treatment of this condition is different because of its bilateralty. In children, special attention should be given to functional disorders such as articulatory disturbances because of the bilateral palsy.
