  • Look Inside

Eighty four cases of lingual cancer treated at the department of otolaryngology of Kyoto prefectural medical university, during the period of 16 years, 1956-1972, are reported.

These cases consisted of 10 of root involvement (12%) and 74 of that of the body (88%). Forty seven cases out of the total number (56%) showed cervical metastasis at the time of admission.

The prognosis of the root involvement was worse than that of the body. Five year survival rate for the former was 0%, while the latter was 45%. The overall 5 year survival rate for the 84 cases was 43%.

Sixty six cases were treated surgically which included those treated before and after-irradiation, while, 18 cases were treated by irradiation with added chemotherapy. The results of these treatments indicated that the first choice should be glossectomy with extensive neck dissection.

However, it has been recently reported that the prognosis of an early carcinoma of the tongue treated, either, by irradiation therapy or that of surgery is equally as good. From these facts, it may be summarized that the irradiation therapy which is more in line with preservation of the function of the organ should be used more often in the future.
