The authors directed their attention to the significance of the process of fusion by which opposing surfaces and adjacent folds come together during the period of morphogenesis in intra-uterine life. In this light the investigation was conducted on the secondary palate formation by observing rat and human embryos.

In observing the area of prefused region at the tips of lateral palatine process and the inferior border of the nasal septum, it was found that there was in existence a specific reaction which may be termed as epithelial cell reaction that occurred only in those cells covering the area intended for future fusion.

Epithelial cell reaction is derived from cell degeneration and mitosis, hypertrophy and disappearance of basement membranes. However, the intensity of the reaction may be dependant on the specie of the animal and the area for which the region may be selected for study.

Pourtois, also, simultaneously, reported that there is a change of adhesive potentiality of the epithelium evidenced by their hypertrophy in the prefused area where the palatine processes are intending to verge together,

Although the etiology of congenital malformation the harelip and the cleft palate cannot be fully explained, it is plausible to consider that the insufficiency or modification of cell reaction may induce some sort of abnormality in this field.
