Two cases of acquired atresia of the ear canal are reported. The first case was caused by erysipelas and the tympanic cavity was also severely damaged. In the second case due to head trauma the tympanic membrane was not involved.
In both cases membranous atresia was observed in the cartilage portion and cholesteatoma-like accumulation was found in the inner part of the obstruction.
The occluded portions were resected surgically and the ear canals remained dry and open after one year postoperatively.
The clinical significance of the acquired atresia of the ear canal is discussed.
