  • Look Inside

Among 3,000 cases of infants delivered within the period of 2 years. 1964 and 1965 an epidemic of ear infection with pseudomonas aeruginosa occurred in 40 infants, 3-6 days postpartvin. Majority of these cases occurred during the hot summer months.

The infecting agent that occurred in 1964 showed a similar pattern of drug sensitivity and the source of infection appeared to be contamination of the water faucet which was commonly used.

No generalized symptom was seen in these cases except for yellowish aural discharge. Most cases responded to treatment within 3-7 days and all cases recovered within the period of 2 weeks.

During the epidemic the fungus was found in high percentage in nosc and throat cultures of other infants who were otherwise normal.
