Akagaki and Mohri report that in 9 cases of Bell's palsy with which they recently experienced the use of 7 % solution of sodium bicarbonate by intravenous injection effected immediate recovery of the symptoms of paralysis. Concensus of opinion in recent years on the etiology of Bell's palsy being the affection of the facial nerve taking place at the region of the stylomastoid faramen by such changes as arteriospasm, local ischemia or edema. In order to relieve these conditions vasodilating agents may be administered, stellate ganglion may be exterpated or the nerve may be relieved of its pressure by edema by surgical decompression of the fallopian canal.
