Shida reports that, for the prevention and treatment of hearing loss that may be sustained by streptomycin therapy, particularly by use of dihydrostreptomycin, clinical use of chondroitin sulfate has shown results that are far superior than either vitamin B1 or A. Clinical application of this agent has been made after attaining results by extensive animal experimentations which was previously reported in The Journal of the Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan, No.2, Vol. 60. When treatment with chondroitin sulfate is instituted in cases where hearing loss is established in not a too long a period, that is, with a few months of its onset, a complete recovery or a marked improvement of that loss are generally the rule. Establishment of this fact appears to be important in that, heretofore, no treatment was available for the conditions referred to.
