Kawashima and associates report a case of Ludwig's angina that failed to respond with a cure to use of antibiotics. Since the end of the war there have been many reports concerning this disease that have been cured by use of chemotherapy without necessarily resorting to surgical means in the treatment. However, in the present case a blind usage of antibiotics proved to be without effect with the treatment being finally reduced to surgical measures and establishment of the type of organism that caused offence and selection of antibiotics according to susceptibility of those particular offender. By using in this way a selected antibiotics in large amount the case was finally brought to cure. The authors maintain that though effectivity of antibiotics in infections can not be denied yet, surgical means in establishing a correct diagnosis can not likewise be ignored in light of recent advances made in the former therapeutic agent.
