Takeuchi reports 2 cases of esophageal stri-cture caused by after-effects of swallowing cau-stic agents, concentrated acetic acid in one and caustic soda in the other. The esophagus in both cases was found to be involved with scar tissue formation for a considerable extent in the lumen of that organ. Both cases were cu-red by gradual dilatation by means of reten-tion bougi facilitated through a gastrostomy opening. The author calls attention to the fact that, in cases of stricture of this nature, there is necessity of keeping the patient adequately supplied with fluids; of constructing gastrosto-my opening as large and close to the cardiac end as is possible. The best means by which to pick up the guide-string of the bougie through gastrostomy opening would be the use of suc-tion.
