Takahashi and Tsukahara maintain that external feature of the nose relative to the height of nasal septum among the Japanese undergo changes that are influenced by environmental and chronological differences. Their conclusions are as follows: Nasal features are underdeveloped, the head shapes are accompanied with a tendency of having a longer neck among the rural dwellers as compared to their counterparts in the city.
Similar points are discernible by chronological comparison from the early Edo period to that of Meiji and the latter to the present.
