KAWATA attempts treatment of nerve-deafness by means of irradiation. The total number of cases thus treated was 24 of which 17 were that of nerve-deafness, 2 of syphilitic origin, 2 of Mettlere's Syndrome, 2 of deaf-mutism and 1 of otosclerosis.

Thirty mg, radium carried specially constructed cannon type applicator is applied to lateral surface of the neck that corresponds of areas where cranial nerve ganglions are located for duration of 1 hour per treatment. Roentgen rays at the dosage of 150 to 200 r are also given in the same area.

The results the author says were most successful in 3 cases, good in 14, while in 2 the treatment had no effect. However, in a case of deaf-mutism it was remarkably_effective by recovery of hearing acuity for loud voices.

It is assumed that the factors that affect improvement or recovery of hearing by the treatment to be the results of radio activity upon cell metabolism through the medium of vegetative nervous system. By token of same means the possibilities that improvement of hearing attained in irradiation treatment of lymphoid tissues about the orifice of Eustachian tube (Crowe, Guild, etc.) might be that of those beneficial effects derived from cervical sympathetic ganlionic irradiation are discussed.
