Kawaoka reports that a boy 5 years of age, who suffered from a laryngeal foreign body, was erroneously diagnosed as an acute cold, croup, or laryngeal diphtheria, by eight physicians, five of whom were pediatricians and the three oto-laryngologists, who previously saw the patient. For 20 days the patient was treated by various means without relief. In author's hands ex-amination under direct laryngescopy revealed a fishbone (Tai) in the larynx and it was removed immediately. Calling attention to other similar cases of erroneous diagnesis in that of foreign body and diphtheria reported in the literature, the author discusses the cause of such errors and stresses the necessity of careful history taking in cases of laryngeal affections.
